I. The rise of dictators

A. Four nations were trying to expand their power and territory

1. Japan

a. In 1937 Japan seized most of coastal China

b. Then, in 1938, the Japanese announced a “new order in East Asia”

2. Italy

a. Benito Mussolini organized the Fascist party.

b. Fascism is a form of government in which a dictator controls the economic and social lives of citizens, stresses nationalism at the expense of human rights, and eliminates all opposition.

3. Germany

a. Poor economic conditions led to the organization of the National Socialist (Nazi) party

b. One of its leaders was Adolf Hitler

· In his book Mein Kampf or “My Struggle,” Hitler had outlined his plans for Germany and described his hatred of the Jews

c. In 1936, Hitler and Mussolini signed a treaty and formed the “Berlin-Rome Axis”

· In 1940, Japan joined the Axis powers

4. Russia

a. Led by Stalin

b. Although Hitler and Stalin did not trust each other they signed a nonaggression pact in 1939 (they agreed to not wage war against each other)

II. The start of the war

A. A neutral United States

1. On September 1, 1939, German troops invaded Poland. Great Britain and France declared war on Germany.

2. President Roosevelt declared the Unites States would remain neutral.

3. The Selective Training and Service Act, enacted in September 1940, required that all men between 21 and 36 register for the draft.

4. Franklin Roosevelt was re-elected president in November 1940. He was the first man to be elected President of the United States 3 times.

B. The attack on Pearl Harbor

1. On Sunday, December 7, 1940, Japanese planes bombed Pearl Harbor.

2. In less than two hours, Japanese bombs sank or damaged 19 ships, destroyed 150 planes, and killed about 2,400 people.

3. President Roosevelt described December 7 as “a day that shall live in infamy”

4. The United States was now at war

III. The United States at war

A. Local hero

1. In July 1941, President Roosevelt had appointed James F. Byrnes to the U.S. Supreme Court.

2. Byrnes was originally from Charleston.

3. Had been one of the most important men in Congress during the New Deal

4. As the war progressed he became the director of the Office of War Mobilization.

5. When Harry S. Truman became president, he named Byrnes as his Secretary of State.

6. Also elected Governor of South Carolina in 1950

B. Military enlistments

1. Over 172,500 South Carolinians served in the Army, Navy, and Marines during the war.

2. Several training bases operated in South Carolina.

C. The war in Europe

1. On June 6, 1944, “D-day,” over 176,000 Allied troops crossed the English Channel to Normandy

2. On April 25, 1945, the American and British forces met the Soviet troops at the Elbe River. A few days later, Hitler reportedly committed suicide.

3. On May 7 Germany surrendered. The war was half over.

4. Hitler’s policy of genocide resulted in the death of at least 6 million Jewish people.

D. The 1944 election

1. Roosevelt won easily and became the only person to be elected to the presidency 4 times.

2. Sadly on April 12, 1945, President Roosevelt suffered a stroke and died.

1. The Allies decided to fight the Japanese using the strategy of “island hopping,” taking only the most important or strategic islands.

2. On August 6, 1945, one atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan.

3. On August 9, 1945, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan.

4. On August 14, 1945, Japan surrendered. World War II was finally over.

F. The cost of war

1. Military deaths on both sides totaled more than 20 million

2. Perhaps as many as 35 million civilians died during the war.

3. Over 400,000 Americans lost their lives

-In the first book of God's Word, Genesis, we find that the world was not always the way it is now. When God first created it, everything was absolutely perfect.
-But God has an enemy who hates Him, a fallen angel named Satan.
-After Adam and Eve disobeyed God, God cursed Satan and told him that one day a Savior would be born Who would crush Satan's head and destroy his evil works.
-D-Day: in Normandy, France. was the turning point in WWII. the war was basically over, but some people kept fighting because they didn't know that the war was over.
-Analogy to: Jesus won a while ago, but there are still little rebellions going on. The redemption will fix all that.
-Genesis 3 - protoevangelium - first good message

-in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth in perfect harmony.
-On the 6th day God completed His creation. God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. Genesis 1:31
-it took God 6 days to complete His creation
-God made a condition. He told Adam and Eve, His first image-bearers, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil."
-As long as Adam and Eve obeyed God's command, they would live forever in harmony with God, with themselves, with each other, and with the earth.
-The Bible doesn't tell us when it happened, but sometime after God completed His creation, His enemy Satan entered the garden as a serpent. Satan spoke to the woman, Eve, and tempted her to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil by saying, "You will not surely die...you will be like God..." Eve believed Satan's lie.
-Adam and Eve were in disharmony with God, with themselves, with each other, and with the earth.

-God never makes a mistake, and nothing can destroy His good plans.
-God told Satan, "I will make you and the woman enemies to each other. Your descendants and her descendants will be enemies. Her child will crush your head, and you will bite his heel." (Genesis 3:15)
-"The reason the Son of God was born on earth was to destroy the devil's work." (1 John 3:8)
-Isaiah 53 - "But it was the Lord who decided to crush him.." (Jesus is described as a lamb like in Psalm 23)
-the word redeem means to pay something in order to free a person from a debt or a punishment.
-God wanted to create a special nation from some of the people who would fill the earth. After many years, Jesus would be born into God's special nation.

-God made a covenant (a special agreement or promise) with Noah to bless him and never again to destroy the earth with a flood. God put a rainbow in the sky as a sign that He would keep His promise.
-Before the fall, God commanded Adam and Eve, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it" (Genesis 1:28 - the Cultural Mandate)
-But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark--you and your sons and your wife and your sons' wives with you - God did save people; He saved 8 people.
-It rained for 40 days and 40 nights.

-Jacob means deceiver
-God said to Jacob: your descendants will be like the dust of the earth.

-Jesus and David came from Judah - who came from Jacob.

-Patriarch: founding father
-Matriarch: founding mother
-Jacob had 12 sons. One of his sons was named Joseph. Joseph lived with his father and brothers in Canaan. Jacob favored Joseph above all his brothers. This special treatment made Joseph’s brothers jealous of him. Because the brothers hated Joseph, they sold him as a slave to be taken to Egypt. But God was with Joseph, and some time later he would become the highest ruler in Egypt, 2nd to the Pharaoh or king.
-What his brothers had meant for Joseph's harm many years before, God used for good. (Some things that are evil, God uses for good.)

-When Jacob was grown, he married 4 wives. Together they had 12 sons.
-One night God appeared to Jacob in the form of a man. The man wrestled with Jacob all night. Jacob limped for the rest of his life. The man said: "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel." This was a blessing to Jacob.

-God is already redeeming things but they are not yet fully redeemed; things are partially redeemed.

-Exodus 1 says "but the Israelites were fruitful and multiplied greatly and became exceedingly numerous, so the land was filled with them." (Sounds like Cultural Mandate)

I.     The Freedmen’s Bureau
    A. Provided food, clothing, and medical supplies to needy blacks
    B. Helped freedmen find jobs
    C. Established schools and military courts
    D. Slaves could have 40 acres and a mule
            1.    Freedmen – former slaves
            2.    Freedmen’s Bureau – a federal government agency established to provide food, shelter, education, health care, and employment for former slaves in the South

II. Presidential Reconstruction

A. Lincoln’s Plan
1. Remove the government officials of the Confederate States of America

      2.    Replace them with officials who were loyal to the Union
3.    Reconstruction – the terms applied to the rebuilding of the South after the Civil War
4.    Pocket veto – an indirect by a president who holds the bills unsigned until after Congress adjourns
5.    On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth shot and wounded the president at Ford’s Theatre. Lincoln died the next day.

B. Johnson’s Plan

1. Andrew Johnson became president after Lincoln died.

2. Supported Lincoln’s plan but added more provisions.

a. Planters whose property was worth $20,000 or more had to appear before him personally to ask for a pardon.

b. Required all states to approve the 13^th Amendment, which made slavery illegal.

c. Required states to nullify their ordinances of secession.

d. Southern states had to promise not to repay the individuals and institutions that had help finance the Confederate States of America

III. Radical Reconstruction

A. Black codes

1. A series of laws intended to restrict the freedoms of blacks.

2. Prevented former slaves from traveling without permits, from assembling, from possessing firearms, or from appearing on the streets after sunset.

B. The Radical Republican Plan (What did it do?)

1. The former confederate states were divided into 5 military districts, each under the command of a military governor

2. Suffrage (the right to vote) was extended to black males and taken away from others. The only white males who could vote were those who had not supported the war.

3. No person who had participated in the war was permitted during public office

4. A state could apply for readmission to the union after it had written a new state constitution that was acceptable to Congress.

5. The new constitution had to be approved by the voters of a state before a state legislature and a governor could be elected.

6. Finally, the legislature would have to approve the 14^th amendment (all persons born or naturalized in the U.S. – including the former slaves – were citizens of the U.S. and of the state in which they lived.)

C. Growing Problems

1. By early 1868, the relationship between Congress and Andrew Johnson was so bad that Congress brought impeachment proceedings against the president.

a. Impeach – to bring charges of wrongdoing against an elected official while that person is still in office

b. President Johnson was charged with “high Crimes and Misdemeanors”

c. The senators voted 35-19 in favor of convicting the president. However, a two-thirds majority was needed (36 votes)

IV. Reconstruction in South Carolina.

A. The Constitution of 1868

1. South Carolina was part of the Second Military District. Under the command of General Daniel E. Sickles.

2. This constitution was different from earlier documents in several ways:

a. Representation was based on population alone.

b. Property requirements for officeholders were abolished.

c. Gave women some rights

d. Education became the responsibility of the state.

B. Carpetbaggers and Scalawags

1. Were two of the major components of the Republican party in South Carolina during the Reconstruction. The freedmen were the third major component.

a. Carpetbaggers – northern whites who moved south after the Civil War

b. Scalawags – white southerners who had not participated in the Confederacy

C. Agriculture after the war

1. Sharecropping was perhaps the most common form of tenant farming. (How did it work?):

a. Sharecropping – an agricultural system where a landless farmer provided the labor and the landowner provided land, housing, seeds, and tools; the farmer received ¹/₃ to ¹/₂of the crop proceeds.

D. Education after the war

1. Education for blacks was the most significant development during reconstruction.

V. The Ku Klux Klan

A. Ku Klux Klan – a secret, racist organization that used intimidation and violence to influence the behavior of the states’ citizens, especially the blacks.

B. White supremacy – the belief that the white race is superior to all other races (the Ku Klux Klan believes in white supremacy)

C. Redeemer – southern white democrats who worked to regain control of the state government after the Civil War

-New Agers look for truth within themselves...they believe they themselves are God.
-truth to a New Ager is: local, subjective, and relative...not universal, objective, and absolute
-Brad Pitt is a New Ager and he said: Do "what feels right for you"!
-New Agers believe that each person must determine what is right and what is wrong for himself or herself. (so do naturalists)
-New Agers also believe people have the right to make and change their moral values.
-Floating morality: New Agers don't believe in God; but they believe in morals...It's not connected to anything...New Agers have nothing to base their morality on. But Christians back up their morality with the Bible.
-New Agers say: don't judge people. Issue: If you say don't judge people, you are judging people by saying that.
-Jesus says: Don't judge people if you're struggling with the same thing yourself.
-The New Age thinking about truth and moral values goes around and around in circles. Eventually the real differences between right/wrong, good/evil, justice/injustice, and kindness/cruelty become very blurred. Nothing is really right, and nothing is really wrong.
-Christian view: our moral awareness comes from God...in two primary ways:
    1. conscience - Romans 2:15 - God's law is written in their hearts.
    2. the Bible -
-God's moral laws are:
    • objective - real and existing independently of us
    • absolute - absolutely perfect in every way, and they absolutely never change
            ►Matthew 5:18 - God's moral laws aren't going to change
            ►Isaiah 5:20-21 - If you say good is evil and evil is good, then bad things will happen to you...
    • universal - applying to everyone at all times
    • If you ignore God's moral laws:
            ►Proverbs 14:12 - there is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.
• God's truth sets us free from the false "truths" of all the unbiblical worldviews like Islam, Naturalism, and New Age.
